I don't know what's going on, but only certain sites will open. Multiply will; Yahoo won't, nor will Google or indeed most others. Distinctly annoying. What am I supposed to do for illustrations and links?
This is why I'm getting out of here instead of persevering. I need a rest anyway.
See you guys tomorrow evening, I suppose. Unless the net comes up suddenly.
As a Multiply regular (I spend most of my time here) it's not usual that I spend so much time away from the site as I did over the last few days, prompting a few anxious questions from a few of you.
I believe I should tell you what happened.
In the first place, I have been overrun with work pressures - not to mention serious health issues. Most evenings I came home tottering with exhaustion, and after taking care of my kids I just had the energy to topple into bed with a book.
Then, there was my computer. My computer (Compaq Presario) dates back to 2002 and had only a 40GB hard disc with a fake Windows XP OS. As data accumulated, it got slower and slower. Finally a crisis point arrived last week when I could hardly get on the net without the computer seizing up. I could barely depend on 3-4 minutes online before the screen froze. This is why I have not been able even to read most of your messages and posts, let alone reply.
Therefore, yesterday, I dismantled the computer and took the CPU in for upgradation. I chose a place which is not among the most well known in town but had two advantages - they were conveniently located, not far from my clinic, and they were fast. They finished the job in two hours flat.
So, as of last evening, I have
A 160GB hard disc along with my old 40GB one
2 GB RAM
Genuine Windows XP Professional
And I've uploaded Mozilla Firefox 2.0, and oh my is this great. I'm in love with the browser. All it needs for perfection is a Internet Explorer-like ability to copy photos to the computer, and there you are.
Last night after reinstalling all the extras (webcam, printer/scanner, digicam software, Avast antivirus) and uploading my stories and other personal stuff from my pen drive, I was just flipping back and forth between sites revelling in my computer's newfound speed...and I promise to be back, be back, as fast and terrible as ever...and oh yes, Mike, as of tonight I am going to be active on your group again.
Meanwhile, I am growing a beard. Be warned.
I am trying to fix the problem. Multiple patches downloaded from several sites (my antivirus system is AVG Free) haven't as yet solved the problem. It needs a lot of sitting up. The computer is restarting itself spontaneously and unpredictably. If I can't get it done I have to call in tech support. Till then, let's see.
