Blog Entry'You've got to believe in SOMETHING'Jun 25, '07 10:29 PM
for everyone

There are many theist arguments (if one can dignify them with the term "argument") that piss me off, but the winner (because of its utter and absolute stupidity) is: "You've got to believe in something."

Now what on earth should I believe in then? And why should I be weak minded enough to have to believe in anything at all?

OK, then, I believe in science. I believe in the four fundamental forces, the strong force, the weak force, electromagnetism, and gravity, because without these four there would have been no matter and no stars and no planets and no us, including the theist who wants me to believe in something.

I have tried explaining this to theists. Did they accept it? No.

I asked the theists then what they believed in. The usual answer was "god". So I asked - in turn - just what "god" was supposed to be. Amazingly few could answer coherently. I mean, if you build your whole life, your whole intellectual system, on the basis of belief in something, doesn't it behoove you to at least be clear in your mind what it is?

The usual answer went something like "But everyone knows who god is." Everyone? I don't, certainly. What is god? An old white man with a white nightgown sitting on a golden throne fingering his white beard? A woman with ten arms, standing on a lion? A skeleton in a military uniform? What is this "god"?

A few relatively intelligent ones said something of this order: "God is a force that is everywhere and is acting on us all the time."

Sure, sure. There is such a force. It's called gravity.

I don't know, however, if the theists would believe in it. It actually exists, after all.
