Blog EntryFriday the Thirteenth BluesApr 13, '07 10:05 AM
for everyone

Last night I got precisely no sleep. I don’t mean I was doing what the double entendre-minded will immediately assume I was doing. I just could not sleep. I spent the night lying awake and semi-dozing once in a while.

Today, it may have slowed my reflexes enough that I nearly got killed.

Sometime this afternoon I was on the road, driving back to my clinic after posting a parcel to a lab for fabricating a prosthesis. On the way back I allowed myself to be squeezed between a road divider and the – as usual - totally anarchic traffic. Incidentally, they’ve switched off all those traffic lights I mentioned. There was no point running them anyway.

So I was sandwiched so tight between traffic and the divider that the leg guard of my bike collided with the divider and I (still moving forward, but slowly) was knocked off my balance and fell on a car. Yes, I (engine racing but in neutral as I instinctively hit both clutch and accelerator) fell over the hood of a Maruti 800cc next to me. Fortunately it was not moving. Even more fortunately, I fell on it and not on the road in the path of one of those giant overloaded trucks that’s always toppling over on mountain bends. I righted myself and could even drive away. Total damage to me: a slightly skinned left elbow. Damage to the bike: a very small scratch on the leg guard where it hit the divider. Damage to the Maruti: none.

However, if it is true that time and space have many dimensions and there are parallel universes, wonder if in one of them I’m a sort of anonymous red paste on the road right now? And then, how long before Multipliers here would have begun to suspect something amiss? And how long before they would’ve given up wondering?

The hell with speculating. I’m hitting the sack early tonight. To sleep, perchance entertainingly to dream.

Incidentally - this Friday the 13th came out pretty well for me, all things considered, didn't it?

Blog EntryAbout a letter from a friendFeb 13, '07 9:20 AM
for everyone

A friend sent me a combo of mails from which I have compiled this excerpt (spellings as in the original). I’ve asked her permission to publish it here. However, she lives on the other side of the earth and what with time differences, I won’t get her permission for 24 hours. If she asks me to, I shall delete this post.

Bill, I need to ask you some questions, okay? I have a little 12 year old younglady that lives next door to us. Last night she was in a horrendous car crash. Her and her sisters along with her older sisters boyfriend were going to a dance. The boyfriend was driving to fast and flipped the truck. My friend (Shalema) was thrown from the truck and broke her neck, when she hit she also hit her head on something causeing a large hole in her skull. I stick rammed through her right eye. They have flown her to a Dallas childrens hospital. What can you tell me, if anything would the procedures be for these types of catastophic injuries? I realize they will have to keep her in a drug induced coma. And, we have not heard yet but she probably has internal injuries also. I just don't know what to expect. She is such a sweetheart. My sons have a crush on her. Its difficult to beleive but she was just here yesterday, laughing, playing vidoe games, eating lunch! Wow! Life can be so precarious!

Her name is Shelmaha. Saturday, she was over here playing video games ' laughing, having such fun, giggling. You never would have thought that less then 8 hours later that same child would be fighting for her life.

Her father has to work the late shift, and her mom only works on the weekends. So, (unbeknowenst to me), since her 2 older sisters were going to a dance about 45 minutes from here. Her sister(16) boyfriend was driving. Her other sister (15) had been allowed to go. But, (I call her Cory) was not suppose to go. But, stay with me. DAMN IT !! Why didn't the parents tell me?

Anyway about 1/2 way there he was driving to fast and the truck flipped. My little Cory was the only one hurt. This may take a while, cause I am crying. . .ONCE AGAIN !! She was thrown from the pick-up. She broke her neck, has a severe skull fracture and will probably lose her right eye because a damn stick went into her eye. ( PLEASE, NOT far enough in to cause brain damage.) Will the eye socker protect her? They flew her to Dalls Childrens Hospital. We haven't heard anything more. But, we Do know of course that she is in Pedicatric I.C.U. and on the severely critical. I do not know if there is brain damage or / and probably internal injuries. Or even paralysis! She is ONLY 12! And so BEAUTIFUL.. she is hispanic, with that beautiful olive skin, big brown eye,s, a GORGeous smile, really long black hair. She is to sweet for her own good!

I baby sat last night. The mom just has a baby 5 weeks ago. So, I was up all, and I do mean , ALL. . . night long with a 5 week old that was NOT used to having mommy to nurse him, a 2 1/2 yr. old boy, and a 4 yr. old little girl. Who were and are so scared and confused. I was afraid to sleep. I was afraid THEY would get scared. BILL!! This is tearing me apart!! She is ONLY 12! If there IS a DAMN GOD, then isn't everyone taught he is suppose to be fair?

OH !! I forgot, what is it that ALL these damn religions teach you? All that bullshit sugarary sweet saccoron carp?

" It was Not, God, my child! THAT was the devil that did that!!" All you must do, my child is pray and beleive that he will make everything okay!"

If that bullshit was true then I would have a granddaughter that was 7 years old. And I did everything in the Christian religion. I even tried to bargain my life for hers. After all I had lived 40 years already. God! Bill, life is so DAMN not fair!

Now, as far as I know the girl in question is still alive and the ruptured eye did not include direct trauma to the brain, so if she is very lucky and she has not got her spinal cord cut and there are no internal crush injuries, she might just get away with no more than the loss of an eye.

But otherwise this incident throws up a few questions.

First: is it right to save lives in every case? If this girl had had a piece of wood rip through her brain, was rendered paraplegic with a destroyed spinal cord, and was permanently otherwise crippled with a torso-full of crushed organs, would it be better to have saved her life at all costs, or let her die? Which would have been kinder? Why should Jack Kevorkian be wrong?

And let me not even go into the advisability of allowing sixteen year olds to get behind the wheels of pickup trucks with young children on board.

Then, of course: as my friend asked, what sort of "god" would allow this to happen?

A cannibal?
